Business Climate
Business thrives here
Our federal, provincial and municipal governments have come
together to create one of the most cost effective business
environments in the world.
Canada leads
Canada is the only G20 economy that ranks in the top 10
countries with low tax rates (2011
Paying Taxes - PricewaterhouseCoopers, World Bank &
International Finance Corporation).
KPMG's Competitive Alternatives study of
the G8 countries found Canada's tax environment to be the lowest
for corporate, information technology and manufacturing industries.
Canada also offers the second lowest corporate income tax for
research and development operations after Mexico.
Alberta advantage
Alberta has one of the most competitive tax systems in North
America. Our province has no provincial capital taxes, no sales
tax, a refundable research and development tax credit and a
publicly funded health insurance system.
In 2011, combined federal and provincial corporate taxes are
26.5% for general business and 14% for small business. In 2012, the
general rate will drop to 25% (Government of Alberta - Economic
Development).
Central values
Central Alberta municipalities have no business taxes, low
property tax and low utility overhead costs for businesses. In
fact, Alberta Venture magazine - one of Canada's most
respected business authorities - listed two of Central Alberta's
centres as the 25 most supportive communities in Western
Canada to set up shop - the City of Red Deer and the Town of
Olds.
